Halloween is perhaps the funnest holiday of the year. How can other holidays compete with adorable costumes, amazing sweets, and just the right chill in the air?

Let’s talk about some tips to help your pets enjoy Halloween just as much as you do.

Tip One: Reduce Anxiousness

Pets can easily get stressed by all the Halloween excitement—unfamiliar decorations, extra visitors, and strange costumes can be unsettling. To help, you can give them CBD oil at 1-2 times the recommended dosage for their weight about an hour before a known trigger. Also, make sure they have a quiet, cozy space away from the commotion where they can feel safe.

Tip Two: No Candy for Pets

Even the healthiest candy for humans isn’t safe for pets, so make sure to keep all human goodies in a cabinet or closed container. Chocolate and xylitol are particularly dangerous, but raisins and some nuts can also pose a risk. Consider making your own healthy pet treats and keeping them near the human goodie box. When your pet is calm and ready to join the fun, reward them with a healthy Halloween treat!

Tip Three: Exercise, Exercise, Exercise

One way to help your pet enjoy Halloween fun is to exercise them into endorphin bliss a few hours before a party or trick or treating. Take your dog to an off leash dog park, for an extra long walk, or simply play a little longer with them. For cats, encourage them to use their cat wheel, attack the catnip filled stuffie, or kill the feather toy with gusto. Help your pet burn off some energy and relax by giving them plenty of exercise a few hours before any parties or trick-or-treating.

Tip Four: Dress for Success

Some pets can’t stand clothing other than their glorious fur, feathers or scales. And who could blame them? Why cover up such amazing splendor? But some pets adore accessorizing their looks and thrive on the human attention received when wearing the most adorable costume ever. For those who like pet clothing, choose their attire wisely. Make sure it fits their personality — avoid things that move around the face for cats and don’t let the custom be so bulky that your 3 lb Chihuahua-Shark can’t get around to show it off. Let them try it on a few days in advance for short bits just to make sure they like it.

Tip Five: Safety for All

Even the friendliest pets can become protective, territorial, or reactive when trick-or-treaters come to the door. Keep dogs on leashes or away from the front door, and ensure that cats are safely indoors before dusk. This will help prevent any accidents or escapes.

With a few precautions, Halloween can be a fun experience for everyone. Help reduce your pet’s anxiousness with CBD, keep the candy out of reach, give them plenty of exercise, choose costumes wisely, and always prioritize their safety on Halloween night.
