Cannabis and CBD have taken the world by storm as more states legalize recreational use. There are many benefits to both, and CBD can provide a range of special benefits for pets.

As a pet parent, you’re probably familiar with what CBD can do for your dog. However, the specifics around incorporating CBD in your dog’s wellness routine are rarely covered. For example, how early can you start giving your pet supplements? Exactly what type of CBD supplements should you be giving your dog?

These questions are normal to have, especially when primary veterinarians are often not allowed to share this information without risking their license. Canna Companion is here to address your questions and concerns about CBD supplements for your dog. You don’t have to leave your pet’s health to Google.

Here are some things to know about giving your dog CBD:

Can I give CBD to my puppy?

Yes, you can give CBD to your pup! The cannabidiol (CBD) found in cannabis pet supplements is typically sourced from hemp, which is a variation of the cannabis plant. Hemp naturally contains extremely low concentrations of THC, which is the plant’s main psychoactive compound that produces a ‘high’.

In other words, your puppy won’t be at risk of getting high or experiencing any psychoactive effects. But you may notice some lethargy, soft stool, or wobbly gait as you determine the right amount of CBD to administer.

Although it’s not common for puppies to need CBD, there are some instances when supplements might be useful:

  • Normal puppy growth spurts
  • Help maintain a normal inflammatory response
  • Promote healthy joints
  • Relieve occasional joint stiffness (especially after a long day of puppy play)
  • Overcome situational anxiety
  • Provide peak immune system function

How much CBD should I give to my dog?

The amount of CBD you need to administer will vary depending on the weight and size of your dog. Every pet’s natural endocannabinoid system (ECS) responds to cannabis differently.

For instance, puppies tend to have a faster metabolism than adult dogs. As such, giving smaller quantities of CBD more frequently often provides the most optimal support.

But puppies also grow fast and will need frequent adjustments to their supplement regimen. Start low and go slow when adjusting the amount of CBD you administer.

When adding CBD supplements to your dog’s wellness routine, especially as they’re growing, oils offer the most flexibility.

CBD oils give you the option to administer a targeted amount. For instance, you might choose to give your pup a larger amount when they need mild sedation during fireworks or a loud thunderstorm.

When it comes to guidelines for exact quantities, we recommend following the labels on your product. With Canna Companion’s whole plant hemp oil for dogs, we take the guesswork out of the equation so you can simply follow the labeled quantities for your dog’s bodyweight.

If your dog appears sedated when they shouldn’t be, reduce each administered amount by half, but keep the frequency (three times a day) the same. If your dog isn’t sedated but should be, increase by 50%.

For instance, if you have a 10 lb. puppy:

Higher amount = 0.15 ml 3x/day
Labeled amount = 0.1 ml 3x/day
Lower amount = 0.05 ml 3/day

Pay attention to your dog’s temperament and mood. Adjust the amount accordingly so you can offer support as needed.

What kind of CBD should I be giving my dog?

As a pet parent, you have a wealth of options when it comes to supplements for your dog. With CBD, new brands are constantly entering the market, making it a lot harder for you to cut through the noise and find the right CBD supplement.

Our licensed veterinarian professionals recommend looking for whole-plant hemp oil with third-party testing results available. Proof of lab results for each batch, also known as a Certificate of Analysis (COA), ensures that the brand you’re working with understands the complexities of CBD and its effects on pets. When combined with labeling information, a COA can also help you compare one product to another.

Other great signs of a credible CBD pet brand are one that has a NASC Quality Seal and is veterinarian approved.

We provide all of these things and more. In addition to a high-quality product, we are committed to making strides in sustainable packaging, shipping, recycling, and more.

All our capsule and oil products use glass bottles and 100% post-consumer recycled cardboard boxes for shipping, no matter the size. Even our labels are thermally printed, which reduces non-recyclable waste and by-products.
