When it comes to your pet, you want to know everything about everything that goes into their bodies, especially when it comes to their health regimen. Whether it’s medicines, supplements, or pet CBD, most pet parents want the full picture of ingredients, benefits, and the overall formulation process.

Particularly with pet CBD supplements, it’s important to get an understanding of the ratios between CBD and THC. However, the cannabis plant contains much more than just CBD and THC. In fact, it contains hundreds of compounds that interact with the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is the receptor system found in animals that can utilize these unique, cannabis-based compounds.

At Canna Companion, our team has a database of over 20+ years of real-life research about the ECS of a pet, plus a combined 105 years of veterinary experience in the industry. We pull from this knowledge to develop some of the highest-quality pet CBD supplements on the market.

Here’s a glimpse into formulations of our product lines so you know exactly what you’re giving your four-legged friend when you opt-in to our care recommendations.

What cannabinoids are used in our pet CBD formulations?

Scientists are constantly learning new things about how the ECS functions. In fact, the more we learn, the more we’re discovering that some of the compounds found in the smallest amounts are the ones that pack the most punch in terms of a positive ECS response.

These compounds are the ones we tend to find in formulations of human or pet CBD. Here is a breakdown of the cannabinoids we most often use:

  • Minor Cannabinoids: CBG, CBC, CBN, CBDV, THCV, and their acids (acids are the primary forms found in plants) are all found in small amounts (<0.08% in most plants). For a long time, this meant these cannabinoids were neglected, but research is telling us to pay closer attention to these compounds.
  • Terpenes: Terpenes are the compounds responsible for the way most plants smell. They are abundant in cannabis, with hundreds being found in the species, ranging from common terpenes in cannabis such as:
  • Beta- caryophyllene (black peppercorn) and myrcene (think: black peppercorn and cloves)
  • Or farnesene  valencene, which are less commonly found in cannabis but other plants, (think: green apples or citrus). All are found in extremely small amounts (<0.008% per terpene).

As the scientific community discovers more about the ECS, we as veterinarians also better understand how responses in your pet are caused by the interactions of these compounds at the receptor level.

In other words, Canna Companion has taken 20+ years (and continues to keep an ear to the ground) to understand how we can best serve your four-legged friend with CBD and the cannabis plant.

What we’ve found is that it only takes minor adjustments in the type and quantity of the above-listed compounds to result in different types of ECS support.

For instance, Canna Companion’s original formulations were based primarily on interactions between terpenes, CBD & THC cannabinoids and their derivatives (CBDA, THCA, delta-9 vs delta-8-THC, etc.).

Our new formulations add to that, incorporating different amounts of minor cannabinoids, that when combined with certain terpene profiles, best support the ECS in specific areas of the body.

What are the minor cannabinoids in pet CBD products?

The minor cannabinoids in combination with both major cannabinoids and terpenes provide us with more tools to truly hone in on the support your pet needs.

Here are the minor cannabinoids Canna Companion uses and how we use them in our capsule and oil formulations:

CBC

Cannabichromene, or CBC, is often the third most prominent cannabinoid. It binds to sensation receptors throughout the body and is thus helpful in a wide range of bodily systems, such as the metabolic system.

CBC also strongly interacts with transient receptor potential (TRP) proteins, which are proteins that mediate processes such as vision, taste, olfaction, hearing touch, and more, and are found within most tissues.

We consider CBC a base/neutral minor cannabinoid, and therefore, use a medium potency level for most of our product formulations (~0.04%).

CBG

Cannabigerol, or CBG, is another flexible minor cannabinoid. CBG is particularly beneficial for neurological tissues, despite its receptor binding affinity being relatively weak.

Like CBC, it also activates TRP proteins and appears widely utilized by the ECS. Due to CBG’s flexibility in use, we like to use medium-high potency levels in our products (~0.07%).

CBN

Strongly sedating in nature, Cannabinol, or CBN,’s effects on the ECS can only be described as soothing. It’s quite potent and a product of THC as THC naturally breaks down, found in trace amounts within the plant.

CBN works very well alongside other compounds, helping to counter potential adverse effects or steering the ECS towards a particular system. Canna Companion products contain very small amounts of CBN (~0.02%).

Sticking with what we know about ratios between CBD and THC, and applying lessons learned through our Consultations Department, Canna Companion expanded our pet CBD formulations to include CBD:CBDA and specific ratios between minor cannabinoids. We further boosted what the ECS can use in specific tissues by altering terpene profiles between formulas.

In other words, by using a strategic, research-backed approach to our formulations, Canna Companion’s products are optimized to help your pet get the best care possible.

Whole Plant Hemp Oil for Cats

Our Whole Plant Hemp Oil line takes into account how CBD oils are processed and utilized by the body.

In typical pet CBD oils, side effects like sedation are common due to how quickly the oil hits the system. While mild sedation can be beneficial in times of anxiousness, it’s not ideal for a pet needing a little extra ECS support after a hard day’s play.

The goal with Canna Companion’s oils is comfort and quiet rest, not sedation. We also paid close attention to the types of minor cannabinoids used and their potential interactions with terpenes; these compounds are quickly absorbed in many cases.

The Whole Plant Hemp Oil for Cats formulation delivers a balanced approach to supporting the endocannabinoid system of your feline friend. Canna Companion veterinary professionals collected data from thousands of animals over 5 years, before making this special feline CBD oil formula with:

  • Balanced ratios of major cannabinoids (CBD:THC 3:1-4:1)
  • Types of CBD (CBDA:CBD 1:2)
  • Combinations of minor cannabinoids (medium levels of CBC and CBN & high levels of CBG)
  • Specific cat-friendly terpene profiles including a-bisabolol and geraniol.

Our CBD for cats is formulated to support feline neurological systems, including but not limited to the normal functions of:

  • the brain
  • spinal cord
  • peripheral neuromuscular input

Whole Plant Hemp Oil for Dogs

Our Whole Plant Hemp Oil for Small and Medium dogs up to 40 pounds delivers a balanced approach to supporting the endocannabinoid system of your small and medium four-legged friends. Small and medium-breed dogs often have different needs than larger dogs and respond better to a lower CBD:THC (higher ratios often cause sedation in smaller patients). This formula is made with:

  • Balanced ratios of major cannabinoids (CBD:THC 3:1-4:1)
  • Types of CBD (CBDA:CBD 1:2)
  • Combinations of minor cannabinoids (medium levels of CBC and CBN & high levels of CBG)
  • Specific terpene profiles featuring humulene and myrcene.

Our CBD for dogs is formulated to support small and medium canine neurological systems, including but not limited to the normal functions of the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral neuromuscular input.

Canna Companion’s Whole Plant Hemp Oil for Dogs >40 lb delivers a balanced approach to supporting the endocannabinoid system of your larger four-legged friends, including breeds like golden retrievers and Bernese mountain dogs. Canna Companion veterinary professionals collected data from over 1,000 animals, over the span of 5 years, before making this special canine CBD oil formula with:

  • Decarboxylated heavy CBD:CBDA (CBD:THC 8:1-9:1)
  • Types of CBD (CBDA:CBD 1:2)
  • Minor cannabinoids (medium levels of CBC and high levels of CBG & CBN)

Our CBD for dogs is formulated to support large canine neurological systems, including but not limited to the normal functions of:

  • the brain
  • spinal cord
  • peripheral neuromuscular input
